Donating Your Horse
Donating your horse to a therapeutic riding center can be a fulfilling way to ensure that your horse continues to have a meaningful purpose and positively impacts the lives of others. We deeply understand the desire to see our animals cared for as if they were family, and there is no better place than Good Pickin’ Farm for this.
However, it’s essential to be aware of the requirements and expectations involved before proceeding with the donation. As a member of PATH International Center Member, we have specific guidelines and needs for our equine partners, and unfortunately, not every horse is suitable for this type of work.
Here are some initial requirements:
Soundness: Horses must be physically sound, with good movement at all gaits, and capable of smooth transitions.
Temperament: They should be unflappable (nothing bothers them), reliable, and adaptable to new situations, including interacting with people of various abilities and other horses.
Training: Horses should be well-trained under saddle, responsive to aids, and comfortable with being ridden by riders of different skill levels.
Age and Health: We are looking for horses and ponies from 6-16 years of age. Some exceptions can be made but it is dependent on the horse’s physical and mental condition)
Vision: Full and complete vision is typically required.
What to Expect:
Evaluation Process: We will evaluate your horse's conformation, health (including a vet check), gaits, and temperament before accepting a donation.
Trial Period: We may require a trial period to assess the horse's suitability within our program.
Updates and Visits: We will provide updates on your horse's well-being and allow you to visit him/her.
There is something about the
outside of a horse that is good for the
inside of a man.
