Girl Scouts
Horsemanship Program

Earn Your Badge with Us!

Availability: Saturday Afternoons & Sunday Mornings, by appointment only
Duration: Roughly 2 hours

As a Program Partner with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, we have developed a horsemanship program tailored for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and other groups eager to explore the world of horsemanship or earn a badge. At the heart of riding is the profound connection between rider and horse, and understanding horse behavior is crucial to this bond. The success of riding hinges on recognizing how horses think and behave, which in turn helps cultivate a trusting and supportive relationship. By learning how to work harmoniously with horses, participants can experience the full benefits of this interaction through this program.

Depending on the number of participants, no more than 24, we will break up the group so that each participant can navigate through a series of “stations” and will work with a staff member to successfully complete each area. Each participant will receive handouts that they can take with them so that they can ensure they remember everything that they learned.

The three focal points for the program:

  • Taking Care of your Horse

    • All the kids will learn what it takes to care for a horse. Our staff will talk to them about the type of housing horses live in, the different types of food horses eat, safety working around horses and the importance of caring for the horse’s health.

  • Horse Grooming and Preparing to Ride/Saddling

    • There will be 1 horse in which the students will be shown how to properly groom (brush) and saddle a horse. Every student will get the opportunity to groom a horse.

  • Ride Your Horse

    • A small group of children will be shown the basic lesson on mounting and dismounting, riding cues to communicate with the horse while riding and they will learn to walk.
